Why You Should Never Bring Chocolate Cake to a Cake Smash – A Photographer’s Perspective
Ah, the cake smash—one of the cutest (and messiest) ways to celebrate your little one’s first birthday. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned as photographers, it’s this:
Do. Not. Bring. Chocolate. Cake.
Why? Because It Looks Like… Well…
Let’s be real—smeared chocolate cake does NOT look cute on camera. It looks suspiciously like something that belongs in a nappy rather than on a beautifully styled cake smash setup. Trust us, we’ve seen it, and once you’ve seen it… you can’t unsee it.
But Will They Actually Smash the Cake?
Here’s a little secret—8 times out of 10, babies don’t actually get as messy as you’d think.
Most either:
- Poke it cautiously like it might bite them back.
- Look at us like, “What do you want me to do with this?”
- Get one tiny bit on their fingers and immediately regret all life choices.
That’s why we always encourage a little taste test at home first. Let them get used to the idea before the big day!
What Should Your Little One Wear?
Whatever you choose, prepare for it to get messy—so don’t pick the special outfit you’ve chosen for their big birthday party!
Our top recommendations:
- For girls: A cute little tutu with their tummy on show is always adorable!
- For boys: Shorts with braces and a bow tie (no top) is a classic and always looks great on camera.
- If topless isn’t your thing: There are loads of cute outfits and ‘One’ baby vests on Amazon that are perfect for cake smash sessions.
The Best Cake for a Smash Session
So, what does work best? Here’s what we recommend:
✅ Soft icing – Not too firm, not too runny, just enough for those perfect little handprints.
❌ Brightly colored icing – Red, blue, or green might seem fun, but they stain everything—your baby, the backdrop, even our camera if we’re not careful!
✅ A simple, pastel-colored cake – Soft pinks, creams, or light yellows photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your little one.

How We Make It Extra Fun
Worried about your baby not getting into the smash? No problem! Before the cake even comes out, we start with our adorable “Pretend Bake the Cake” setup—complete with a tiny chef’s hat, a mixing bowl, and a dusting of flour on their nose. It’s a huge hit with parents, and those images? Absolutely priceless!
Plan Ahead & Make the Most of It!
We always recommend booking your cake smash session a few weeks before their birthday so you can use the images for:
- Invites to their party
- Posters & decorations at the event
- Thank you cards for after the celebrations
